Candles play a central role in Day of the Dead celebrations, serving both practical and symbolic purposes. During this Mexican tradition, families honor deceased loved ones by creating ofrendas, or altars, adorned with photos, food, and personal mementos. Candles are lit to guide spirits back to the world of the living, their flickering flames representing hope and remembrance. The soft glow also creates an atmosphere of warmth and reverence, making the space feel sacred.

Different candle colors carry distinct meanings. White candles symbolize purity and peace, while orange ones represent the sun and marigolds, flowers commonly used in the holiday. Purple candles signify mourning, and pink ones celebrate life. Many families choose candles with religious imagery or scents like copal to enhance the spiritual connection. The act of lighting them is a quiet, intentional moment, reinforcing the bond between the living and the dead.
